Two leading law firms complete historic merger

Friday, 24 January 2025

Two of Ireland’s largest law firms, ByrneWallace LLP and LK Shields Solicitors LLP have completed their historic merger to create Byrne Wallace Shields.  The agreement to merge the two firms was announced in November of last year and has now completed.  It is one of the largest mergers yet undertaken between two Irish law firms.  Byrne Wallace Shields has over 430 employees – including 220 solicitors.

The Managing Partner of the merged firm is Feargal Brennan, who was previously Managing Partner of ByrneWallace.  Richard Curran, who was formerly Managing Partner of LK Shields is Senior Partner in the merged firm.

Byrne Wallace Shields offers strength in depth across the key areas of corporate and commercial law including Corporate/M&A, Disputes and Regulatory, Banking & Financial Services, EU & Competition, Tax, Property, Infrastructure Construction & Energy, Public Sector, Employment, Technology, AI, Cyber, and Data Privacy.

Speaking today, Managing Partner Feargal Brennan said that the merger had progressed smoothly, and the two firms were now focussed on maximising the benefits of the merger for clients and staff.  He said, “the merger has been extremely well received by clients and colleagues alike.  We can now give our clients a larger, better resourced firm to service their needs, and we can target larger, more complex mandates from existing and new clients.”

Richard Curran said that clients had responded enthusiastically to the deal: “we’ve had a fantastic response from clients who see the advantages for them in having a larger, better resourced firm to support them.”
